Last night I read a tweet from @ChrisBrogan as he was boarding a flight to Milwaukee. Now, the average person (who isn’t on Twitter and doesn’t spend way too much money on Amazon books) would have no idea who he is and why that is a big deal. For me, it was like NERD ALERT! NERD ALERT! MEGAN IS OBSESSED WITH CHRIS BROGAN – his blog, book, tweets, you name it! I wanted to go to @AJBombers and have a beer with him. And more than anything, I wanted to go to the Boelter and Lincoln Tweet-Up this morning. I woke up at 5:00am and showered only to practically fall over when blow-drying my hair. Wasn’t going to happen.
Every time I hear about an author coming to town or even to a town near me I feel somewhat star struck! Or maybe that’s not the right word – intellect struck? I headed down to Woodfield in November to meet Nicole Williams (Wildly Sophisticated and The Girl on Top), made my mom run to Anderson’s in Naperville and get a signed copy of Daniel Pink’s new book “Drive,” met Barbara Walters at her ‘Audition’ signing, Cathie Black and her book ‘Basic Black,’ and of course Peter Shankman in New York with his book ‘Can we do that?’
However, when I ended up in the baking aisle at Target on a Saturday night at 6:30pm and bumped into Danny Gokey from American Idol I didn’t blink. I thought – wow, thank God celebrities lives are as lame as mine on Saturday nights. I never thought to talk text my family or think I was cool. I have seen other celebrities and not thought twice – once I was annoyed that Hulk Hogan was on the same floor as I was at the Hard Rock in San Diego, but that was because I wasn’t thrilled that he was getting divorced and dating someone his daughter’s age. Celebrities just don’t do it for me like authors do. Maybe it’s because I want to be one some day?
What signals your nerd alert? The new iPad announcement from Apple? Going back stage at your favorite concert? Running into a hero from the Biggest Loser? Perhaps meeting Kenneth Cole or another famous designer?
Figure it out. It says something aboPublish Postut you and your passion in life.

It was cool to see the video Chris interacting with Joe Sorge of AJ Bombers! Admittedly I did not know who he was until the other day. I have never brushed elbows with a celebrity. (The closest I've come is tweeting with local news anchor Susan Kim!) But I am positive that I would go all NERD ALERT to meet someone like Les Stroud, the Survivorman, or anyone who has climbed Mt Everest or something equally amazing. Not sure what that says about my passion -- perhaps I'm a thrill-seeker?
You thrill seeker- you! I think that is exactly what it says- you go for the impossible. And you achieve it (hello miss couch/party animal to marathon runner in less than a year). I think I almost go into NERD ALERT panic mode when I see Bananza! It's like a Milwaukee celebrity! Seriously. Look forward to seeing you soon.
THanks for the comment! I actually didn't know what Joe from AJBombers looked like either- I know what Mike looks like- he is cute. Mike (my husband) and I will be there tomorrow night for happy hour- hope to see you! If you are there every friday?!?!
Hi Megan! What time will you be there? I may drop by -- it would be great to see you! If you have a chance, you should mention to Joe that you'd like to do a Water Buffalo tasting - you'd be perfect for it. He dines with you at the table and recommends dishes and you tweet about how delicious they are. :)
Thank you for mentioning B+L in your post. I'm sorry you couldn't make the Tweet Up! - B+L PR AE.
"Celebrities just don’t do it for me like authors do."
I'm so the same way. Jon Stewart and Ellen DeGeneres are my exceptions because I think they're brilliantly smart and I'd kill to meet them.
Other signifiers of my nerd alert? Being able to hack my own code on my blog... seeing social media used for charity, support, and connections... ha.
Thanks for all the comments! Just had a chance to check back in and see them now! Hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend.
I ended up here after reading Anne's recent post about nerd alerts (I guess she got the idea from you). I guess you and I have a lot in common because I too wanted to meet Chris Brogan as well. I got just plain dump lucky and ended up sitting with him for almost an hour at AJ Bombers with Joe, Tracey Apps and Katie Feleton. He was very real and it was amazing. I wrote about it over on JimRaffel.com if you have not seen it yet.
Nice to meet you.
Thanks! I will most definitely check out your post. Glad we are both Chris Brogan nerds but you ended up lucky enough to hang out with him. Thanks for reading!
